Christchurch earthquake homeless

23 February 2011

Can you Help a Christchurch Homeless from yesterday's devastating earthquake by offering a room or accommodation in your home?

An earthquake affects everyone, especially in such a small place like New Zealand. No doubt everyone will be aware that a national state of emergency has been declared here in our beloved land of Aotearoa because of the earthquake that struck Christchurch yesterday causing mass devastation and thousands of homeless in make-shift shelters around Christchurch.

The people of Canterbury are also bearing with restrictions on water and sanitation even if they still have some of their own homes left and you only need to see it on television's TV One News and on the internet that resources are stretched to the limit.

The scale of devastation of this time's Christchurch earthquake following only six months after their last earthquake has not only affected our fellow countrymen but also a lot of visitors and travellers to New Zealand.

This is an appeal to everyone in New Zealand all over New Zealand who can offer short-term accommodation out of the kindness of their hearts to offload the burden of the homeless who are filling up the growing number of shelters down in Christchurch.

Countries from around the world have been offering assistance to New Zealand, but charity also begins at home as you know.

If anyone can offer accommodation for people displaced in this earthquake, you can phone: Freephone 0800 435 700 directly from anywhere in New Zealand. I myself have registered my offer and if you wish to join me in offering help.

To the people of Christchurch and Canterbury, all our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Alfred Memelink, our website client, put up his painting for auction on trademe to raise funds for Christchurch to help restore a historic exhibition building following the earthquake in September. This is such a good idea that I thought I would pass it on in case any of you are interested in doing the same.

Original Watercolour painting "Snowstorm over the Transantarctic Mountain Rangeby" by Alfred Memelink

**All proceeds from the sale of this painting will go to Mayor Bob Parkers newly launched fund to help repair and restore Christchurch's much-loved heritage buildings damaged during the recent Canterbury earthquake**

This watercolour painting was destined to be part of an exhibition due to open today, Wednesday 15 Sept, at an art gallery in one of Christchurchs historic buildings. Our City O-Tautahi is a much loved community venue in a beautiful Queen Anne building on the corner of Worcester Blvd and Oxford Tce. This building used to be the Christchurch City Council's original Municipal Chambers.

Due to structural damage to the building the exhibition was understandably cancelled however the exhibition can still be viewed on line by following the link to. http://www.memelink.co.nz/gallery1_antarctica/index.htm or at the next venue, the Percy Thomson Gallery, Stratford between 21 Dec - 24 Jan 2011
This painting was inspired by photos and paintings that I completed during a NIWA research voyage to Antarctica in 2008 and depicts the magnificent Transantarctic Mountain range.

A unique aspect of this painting is that it has an actual piece of Antarctica embedded in the protective mat surround, a Glacial Erratic Stone. It is one of the stones I collected after it was trawled from the Ross Sea seabed during the scientific voyage. Erratics are formed when glaciers slowly grind across the bedrock of the Antarctic mainland. Rock fragments that were chipped off are picked up, polished and carried by the ice all the way to the Ross Sea. After the iceberg breaks off calved from the iceshelf, it cruises around the Ross Sea and as it slowly melts it drops the erratic to the seabed.

Framed in conservation materials, size 780mm 630mm.

The painting can be viewed at The Coffee Club, Westfield Mall, Lower Hutt until Thurs 24th Sept after which it can be viewed at Kiwiarthouse Gallery, 288 Cuba St, Wellington.

Thanks Trademe for sponsoring this auction.
