How to Choose a Domain Name

1 September 2009

The first thing you need to do when creating a website is to choose a domain name. This is your address on the web.

When choosing a domain name:

* Choose one that reflects your business.
* Keep it short.
* Keep it memorable.
* Keep it simple to spell.

Think slowly, act quickly to secure your domain name. Good names are gone quickly.

You can check to see if a domain name is available by going to 1st domains to search for available names and see if the domain name you want is already taken.

It's important to act quickly and secure your domain name if you feel the name is perfect for you, as there are companies called domain name flippers that buy and re-sell good domain names.

Also it's important to renew your domain name annually as it's easy to loose. Nearing the end of the registration period, the registrar sends a renewal notice to the domain owner via email. If the owner does not respond in a certain amount of time, the name is placed back on the market and can then be purchased by anyone else.
